ART 125 – Digital Imaging I – 3 humanities credits
An introduction to the computer as a tool for visual art, with a focus on gaining proficiency in Adobe Photoshop. Students learn photo retouching, painting, collage, and drawing techniques. Operation of scanners and printers, file management, and digital practices are covered. Includes discussion of digital art concepts and examples of digital media in contemporary art and design. Therefore, content of subject matter is a separate medium through which viewers can connect to reality through the falsity and simulation of the image, which ironically is convincing. While I rely upon digital photographs as aesthetic references, I create simulations of reality rather than representations (Photorealism) of simulations (photos) which themselves are already representations of reality.

To make a synthetic picture with computer graphics, we usually imagine a camera of some sort, taking a picture of a scene. Such cameras range from the simplest pinhole camera to a sophisticated simulation of optics and shutters. We explore some interesting, alternative imaging models – such as digital cubism. We harness the possibilities for communicating ideas and story points in new and expressive ways. – Andrew Glassner

Kurt Schwitters – website
“I am a painter and I nail my pictures together,” Kurt Schwitters said to fellow artist Tristan Tzara in 1919. At a time when German art was a heady mix of Expressionism’s yellow cows, Cubist collage’s angular abstraction and Futurism’s dynamic diagonals, Schwitters, a 32-year-old former art student working in a factory in Hannover, had started to make iconoclastic pictures out of discarded materials. A friend remembers him collecting “every tram-ticket, every envelope, cheese wrapper or cigar-band, together with old shoe-soles or shoe-laces, wire, feathers, dishcloths.”
“The opposite solution was new. Instead of energizing the surfaces of his materials, he could relax the recently established compositional geometry, and allow materials a greater independence than they had even in the early collages – in which case, the materials could remain clear and geometric; indeed, they would need to be. Their clarity and geometry would compensate for what had been surrendered on these counts in the newly relaxed compositions. As with the mature pioneering collages, the materials would create the structure. Just as, in those collages, Schwitters had to free himself from dependence on a priori, Futuro-Expressionist and Cubist-influenced structures, so in the early 1920s he had to free himself from a priori Constructivist, and especially De Stijl, structures. When he wrote of having “condensed” his effects in 1924, and made then his “first attempts at a greater rigor, simplification and more universal expression,” it was not to the influence of Constructivism, but to his beginning to achieve a new, personal order out of Constructivism, that he referred.

As part and parcel of this newfound concern for thematic content, Basquiat implemented two new devices, both of which would become mainstays of his pictorial vocabulary. In addition to exploring the integration of image and text, Basquiat discovered more complex and elaborate means of “layering” the distinct planes of illusionistic space created by form, color, line, and atmospheric effects into a unified composition. These strategies became especially pronounced through the artist’s practice of collaging both original and photocopied drawings directly onto the canvas. While there are no collaged drawings in Per Capita, this work signaled to the artist the possibility of introducing new source material in his quest for the unification of text and image. The subsequent introduction of a collaged ground not only facilitated the union of image and text but enabled a more seamless integration of an “exterior” world into the fictive pictorial realm.

Explain the creative expression, process and methodology used for all 3 assignments to represent your own ideas or that of sustainable development (Hyper-realism, Cubism, Color and Collage). Discuss the aesthetic differences and similarities between all three themes and purpose (hyper, cubism, collage). Paper should site resources using links 2) students will present using their WP site to demonstrate evolution of the final assignments, Focus will primarily be on the new FINAL artworks. 3) Hardcopy of all three pieces (13×19) must be handed in along with a CD and all documents uploaded to your WP blog.
